Apple last week unveiled Apple Intelligence, a groundbreaking personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This new system integrates powerful generative models with personal context to deliver highly relevant and useful intelligence, setting a new standard for privacy in AI.
Apple Intelligence is deeply embedded into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It leverages the power of Apple silicon to understand and generate language and images, perform actions across apps, and use personal context to simplify everyday tasks. The system also introduces Private Cloud Compute, which balances on-device processing with server-based models on dedicated Apple silicon servers to ensure privacy and security.
“We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence. And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them. This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do.”
Apple Intelligence offers new ways to enhance communication and writing. With systemwide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various apps, including Mail, Notes, and Pages.
In Mail, new features like Priority Messages, Smart Reply, and detailed summaries make managing emails easier. Notifications are also improved with Priority Notifications and Reduce Interruptions Focus, ensuring users only receive essential alerts.
In the Notes and Phone apps, users can now record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When recordings are made during calls, participants are notified, and summaries are generated post-call.
Apple Intelligence also introduces Image Playground, allowing users to create images in Animation, Illustration, or Sketch styles within apps like Messages. Additionally, Genmoji lets users create personalized emoji based on text descriptions or photos.
In Photos, users can search for specific images using natural language and utilize the new Clean Up tool to remove distracting background objects. The Memories feature allows users to create storylines from photos and videos, complete with music suggestions from Apple Music.
Siri has been enhanced with deeper language understanding and integration into the system. Users can now type to Siri, switch between text and voice, and benefit from richer context-aware interactions. Siri can also perform hundreds of new actions across apps, making it easier to manage tasks and retrieve information.
A cornerstone of Apple Intelligence is its commitment to privacy. By utilizing on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, Apple ensures that user data remains secure. Independent experts can inspect the server code, and cryptographic measures prevent unauthorized communication with servers.
Apple is integrating ChatGPT across iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, allowing users to access its capabilities without switching tools. Siri can use ChatGPT for broader knowledge queries, with user permission required for data sharing. This integration extends to systemwide Writing Tools, helping users generate content and images.
Apple Intelligence represents a significant leap forward in AI, blending advanced generative models with personal context to deliver a highly intuitive and secure user experience. With enhancements across language processing, image creation, and privacy, Apple continues to set new benchmarks in personal technology.
